SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) - The Basics
What is SEO?
SEO (or Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of getting organic or natural traffic to your website.
What types of SEO are there?
There are two types of SEO - these are on-site (where you focus on the content of the site itself across a wide range of factors to help improve your website readability and performance) and off-site (where you focus on off-site factors, such as link building, guest blogging, Social interaction etc).
Why should I focus on SEO?
SEO helps improve your website ranking on the Search Engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. Getting ranked higher on these sites means you will begin to generate more natural (unpaid for) traffic to your site, with the search engines bringing customers to who are interested in your product or service.
Can I do this myself?
Yes - especially on-site. But as with anything, improvements take time and, of course, it helps if you know what you are doing!
Are there some key facts we should know?
- Write content for your user - not for the search engine. The search engines main goal is to provide the user with the content that best fits what they are looking for. Therefore doing things like keyword stuffing (where you overuse keywords in your content) is something that Google will actually penalise.
- Don't forget your META title and description. These are important keys in your goal to rank high - make them keyword rich but also try to draw the user in - remember, they'll see this when your website is on the search page!
- <h1> tags are important, but only use one. The H1 tag is your way of telling the search engine what your site is about and what you do - use it wisely!
